Frequently asked questions

We are not authorised to remove council meters, please speak to your local municipality. We only install SUB meters. This means you need to be renting your property to a tenant. The tenant will purchase electricity via ourselves, to recharge the meter we install

You will still receive a council bill which you will need to settle from the funds that we pay you from your tenants purchases. You do not need council approval to install our submeter.

Revenue protection is a primary reason to install a prepaid sub meter, which ensures that you will receive your money for utilities in advance. It will also eradicate disputes with your tenant as everything is accurately recorded and there are thus no estimates.

Yes, there is a 12 month manufacturer warranty on all our meters.

This depends on which meter you purchase. If you purchase an integrated meter and it is not locked away, it can be bypassed. This can be detected and monitored on our reporting platform by monitoring your tenants purchases.

A more secure option is to go with a split meter, which means the meter is installed in a kiosk and only the keypad is placed inside the unit. In order for the tenant to bypass the meter they would need to gain access to the kiosk which is normally locked and controlled.

Yes. You can get your own installer to install the meter, or you can use one of our professional installers.

One of our expert consultants will guide you telephonically on which meter to choose. Should the installation be complex, we will suggest that a site inspection is performed in order to avoid any unforeseen complications.

Yes, we have installers nationwide.

Purchase meters from PREPAID NOW and fill in the registration form. Indicate which meters belong to which tenants. Once registered, meters will be activated and you will be able to view them on our online portal. Thereafter your tenants will be able to purchase tokens.

Tenants have the choice of purchasing tokens from retailers, from our website or via EFT. The cheapest way to purchase tokens is by EFT to one of our accounts. They will only need to provide the retailer with their meter number.

Once the tenant has made a purchase, they will receive a 20 digit token. Depending on the method of recharge the token will either be a receipt or a sms. The tenant will need to enter this token on the keypad in order to add electricity to the meter. No other tenant can use that specific token – it will only work on the meter number it was generated for. If a tenant loses a token they can contact our call centre for a reprint.

Yes, there is an option for landlords to generate tokens themselves and collect the funds. This is not as convenient as third party vending as those channels are available 24/7, whereas the self manged option is reliant on the landlords availability.

The tariff is calculated on the council bill that the landlord receives. Our experts will guide the landlord on setting the tariff to ensure he recovers all his utility costs. The Rental Housing Act does not allow landlords to make a profit on utilities.

Yes, our advanced utility platform can manage all types of tariffs including standard, step and demand tariffs.

Our advanced utility platform can provide multiple types of reports including month usage statements, summary usage reports, detailed per transaction usage reports and meter non recharge reports which identify suspect meters that may have been bypassed.

Yes, our system has the ability to load and collect arrears. These arrears can be collected in full or as a percentage of each transaction. These arrears require the consent of the tenant in order to be collected via the meter.

We pay out all tenant collections by the 7th of the following month.
